Hongye Forum No. 14

Jan 05, 2026
Dr.  Josep G. Canadell is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science  (AAS) and a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences  and Engineering (ATSE). He serves as the Executive Director of the  Global Carbon Project (GCP), and is the Chief Scientist for both the  Climate Systems Hub of Australia’s National Environmental Science  Program and the Earth Systems and Global Change portfolio at the  Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO).  Dr. Canadell is a globally outstanding scientist in ecosystem and  climate change research, having contributed to the United Nations’  Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for the last 20 years,  serving as a coordinator and lead author in multiple IPCC assessment  reports (AR4, AR5, AR6), and has participated in multiple assessments by  the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). In 2021, Reuters ranked  him as the 8th most influential climate scientist globally. He has  co-authored over 250 peer-reviewed research papers, with 70 papers in  the journals of Nature/s and Science. His published work has attracted  over 150,000 citations in the scientific literature.
His  speech title is "The Global Carbon Budget and the Emergence of  Carbon-Climate Feedbacks", outlines the major sources and sinks of  carbon and their role in regulating atmospheric CO₂ concentrations. The  talk highlights how climate change alters carbon cycle processes,  leading to feedbacks such as reduced carbon uptake by oceans and  terrestrial ecosystems and increased carbon release from soils and  permafrost. These feedbacks can amplify global warming and increase  uncertainty in future climate projections. Understanding the global  carbon budget and carbon–climate feedbacks is therefore essential for  assessing remaining carbon budgets and informing effective climate  mitigation strategies.
