Talent plays an important role in science and technology innovation. In accordance with the strategy of CAS, IOB has taken many steps to attract new talents and train young scientists. Our human resource policies aim to use existing talents properly, attract and train young talent, and initiate training programs for future talents. Importantly, IOB has made great efforts to create a mechanism for fair competition and to invest largely in improving infrastructure and research facilities, which is very effective in both recruitment of new talent and enhancing performance. At the end of 2007, IOB had 497 regular staff: 289 were employed in knowledge innovation positions. 226 people were employed in the scientific research sector, 42 were in the support sector, and 21 were in the management sector. Among the employees in innovative positions, 94% had a doctoral degree, and 87% in the scientific research sector were younger than 45 years; 74% and 43% in the support and management sectors, respectively, had a master's degree. Recently, 29 people were introduced to IOB through the "100 Talents Program", including 18 from overseas and 11 locally. Twelve faculty members have obtained funding from the National Excellent Youth Foundation, and 2 innovative groups obtained funding from the NSFC. Great progress has been made in talent training and team construction.
Education for graduates
At the end of 2007, IOB enrolled 646 graduates, among which 301 were doctoral students and 345 were master's students. 42 people were employed as postdocs. In this year, the graduate training system, including psychological training, was strengthened and improved. A workshop on training graduate supervisors was successfully held, and a new course, "The Advance of Cell Biology and the Scientific Philosophy for Doctoral Graduates," was offered, and well-known scientists from overseas were invited to give lectures. The BBS and Publication named Green Metaseguoia was established to enrich the lives of graduates. In 2007, 4 graduates obtained the prizes of excellence from the president of CAS.
