Before the earthquake occurred in May 12, 2160 botanical specimens of 554 series were collected from areas such as Qionglai, Dayi, Chongzhou, and Pengzhou. Data collection and an interface design for ornamental plant database of Sichuan Province was begun; a propagation experiment on 130,000 lilies of more than 10 species in Longchi cooperating with Youlante Company (Chengdu) was carried out; and sponsored by the Dujiangyan’s Working Committee, and compilation of popular science readings on botany was almost finished. Finally, we provided assistance for IOB and Dujiangyan Government to hold a specialized conference on accelerating the development of the China Rhododendron Garden.

After the earthquake, our staff began to rescue hurt staff, salvage science-technology archives and materials, and reconstruct the damaged botanic garden under the leadership of the CAS, IOB, and Dujiangyan government. One buried staff member was rescued from a collapsed building. We salvaged 80% of the administrative and financial documents, most science-technology materials and almost 10,000 botanical specimens. A provisional bridge and a provisional prefabricated house with an area of 300 m2were built. These achievements have gradually helped restore our garden. During September and October, a team of our staff went to northwest Yunnan and collected 75 series of Rhododendron, among which were 18 new species. The staff also attended the research project on the influence of the earthquake on the panda habitat organized by FFI.

During the earthquake, Feng Zhengbo, the assistant director, and Xiong Hailan, an accountant, were killed. A Rhododendron nursery covering 1.3 ha was destroyed. The whole Longchi base and most of the buildings and facilities in the Xinguanshan base were damaged. At present, we are making plans for post-disaster reconstruction and are trying to rise from the ashes as a member of the National Scientific Botanical Garden System.
