SCB is one of the five disciplinary sub-centers of the CERN, CAS. SCB was officially established in 1993, and its major missions are to 1) control data quality of biological monitoring, including developing biological monitoring protocols, calibrating instruments, technician training, instruction and supervision of the monitoring process, data examination and assessment, instrumental analysis of difficult parameters, and studies on biological monitoring methods; 2) conduct data integration and management, including data collection, database development, data sharing, and data synthetic analysis; and 3) implement synthesis studies on ecosystem structure and function at local or national scales.

The main achievement of SCB in 2008 included data examination and assessment of 33 stations of CERN monitored in 2007; instruction of biological monitoring, successfully holding “2008 training courses on biological monitoring and data quality controlling”, one-by-one examination of plant species names in the species lists of 33 stations of CERN, field visiting seven CERN stations, successfully applying a Key Project for Knowledge Innovation Engineering of the CAS, and as key members, participating in holding an “International Training Course for Establishment and Management of Field Research Stations” entrusted by Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China.
