The center, a main support division of IOB, is an important part of the knowledge innovation system of the Institute. It is composed of a library, a journal department (including 7 journals, among them 6 academics and 1 popular scientific), a training department and the office of the Botanical Society of China. The center has 38 staff, 14 of whom have PhD degrees and 9 have master's. The departments of the center not only play an important role in ensuring that the scientific activities of the Institute are carried out smoothly, but also actively participate in broad international cooperation and scientific exchange, which make the center progress rapidly in the quest for journal internationalization, literature and information collection and support. The center also constructs and maintains several scientific basic databases and platforms such as the Chinese Virtual Herbarium (CVH), the Species 2000 China Regional Node, the Biodiversity Heritage Library China Node (BHL-China), the Encyclopedia of Life China Node (EOL-China), the China Plant Red List, and the Chinese Field Herbarium (CFH).
In 2011, the library, based on the premise of carrying on traditional work while fully guaranteeing the literature requirements of its researchers and students, has actively developed new services.
The literature resources distribution has been adjusted according to quantitative analysis of literature usage of the Institute over the past 5 years. We subscribed to 13 electronic literature databases, 1 abstract and 12 full-text databases. 6 stand-alone databases were opened and 35 free ones have been organized and are available onsite. The printed collection is expanding; we purchased 63 copies of books, catalogued 344 books and 271 journals with 2,523 copies. Meanwhile, the e-Reading Room has received more than 2,000 readers, we borrowed and returned more than 7,000 copies of printed books and/or journals and served nearly 3,000 readers; the original book delivery service was carried out; we applied to the Peking University Library, CAS Library, Tsinghua University Library, National Library and other libraries for more than 200 books; more than 100 original literature transfer requests were accepted and over 500 articles were provided with the readers by the library; the "original literature transfer" work was given a bulletin commendedation by the National Science Library, CAS. The number of document deliveries and documents provided are ranked the top ten among the institute-level libraries. We totally exchanged almost 2,000 books and/or journals with the international libraries; we submitted more than 150 PhD theses related to doctoral-level biology to the CAS, updated the Institute's PhD and Master's thesis database. The library also jointly with the Institute Labor Union managed the "staff family" which attained high evaluations from the Labor Union of the CAS and the staff of the Institute as well.
We launched the "Scientific information service forum", organized the training workshop for readers, explaining the reader's guidelines, showing the audience how to retrieve literature from the electronic and printed version of the database, and describing the usage of Endnote. The library newly serves to provide the "report on collection and citation of publications " to researchers and students, joins in "International Digital Lending" activities, and opens the "Book Recommendation" channel through which the reader can request the books they want, for which the library would cover the cost. The library also actively engaged in funding applications: the project "sustainable intelligence service for the Institute" has received approval. More than 10,000 copies of books and/or journals were digitized over 2011 along with the BHL (Biodiversity Heritage Library)-China workgroup. The library was awarded the title of "Outstanding Innovative Service Team" by the CAS.
In 2011, the work of Training Department stresses its main thoughts, it organized and undertook four technical training courses, there were: the Training Course on the Techniques of the GIS system, Digital and Geotarget usage in Biological Field Investigation; the training course in botanical Latin, collection, taxonomy, nomenclature and binding; the training course in basic botanical taxonomy; the training course in bio-statistics and the use of R language.
The training department has used the excellent academic platform of IOB to carry on scientific training and international scientific exchange. Over the past four years, the series scientific activities has obtained good attendance, and the Training Department has enjoyed its favorable comment by all students who attended courses, thus the institute has exerted great influence both at home and abroad.
In 2011, the Chinese Virtual Herbarium (CVH) finished the integration of 1.53 million specimens from the Taiwan area, and the Species 2000 China Regional Node published a CD-ROM of the 2011 Annual Checklist of Catalogue of Life China (English version). BHL(Biodiversity Heritage Library) China Node scanned more than 9000 volumes of books, EOL (Encyclopedia of Life) China Node completed the construction of 2,911 species pages and the number of daily updated photos in Nature Museum was more than 2,000 (entirely 2.2 million photos). We also finished the construction of the Subject Database of China Plant. All of these websites formed part of an increasingly famous group of websites on biodiversity information in China. Besides, on the basis of supportive materials from 300 botanical experts, the project of China Plant Red List assessed the endangered levels of all plants in China and checked the levels of some important taxonomy. In our team, one person is selected as Young Member of the Chinese National Committee for CODATA(Committee on Data for Science and Technology) and two persons have been funded by National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC).
On the hand of academic exchange, we took part in several conferences like the Conference of 2nd Biodiversity Informatics. We were also invited to join the Life and Literature Conference in Chicago, US and made connections with researchers at the Smithsonian Institute to enhance the relationships with international colleagues. Furthermore, a number of papers on biodiversity informatics were published by us in 2011.
