The history of the Herbarium (PE) can be traced back over 80 years with an area of 11,000 m2. At present the herbarium collections numbered 2.69 million specimens, including fossils, seeds, mosses, ferns and seed plants, which are the largest research resources for plant taxonomy in Asia. Prof. Deyuan Hong is the honorary Curator, and Prof. Xianchun Zhang is the Curator.
Expedition and Collection. In 2015, Taxonomists of PE have undertaken several expeditions in Indonesia, Qinghai, Xinjiang, Gansu, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi, Fujian, Zhejiang, Sichuan provinces. About 18,666 specimens were collected.
Conservation and Digitization of Collections. The collection is growing with an addition of 20,715 new specimens and 7,232 specimens were exchanged with 25 herbaria from 18 countries in the world. 31,353 specimens were digitized, including 28 type specimens sorted out. In additions, 10,838 specimens were identified by our researches. Visitors from 256,112 IP have accessed PE's database.
Public Education and Social Service. During the year 2015, the Herbarium received 2,601 visitors (including 130 oversea researchers) and provided the service for researchers to borrow or loan nearly 69 bathes, 4,662 specimens, and response to about 233 consultations. The botanical illustrations of 403 species in Flora of Pan-Himalayas have been prepared by the herbarium artist. PE conducted the Training Courses of Specimens Digitization, which attracted more than 67 trainees from colleges and institutes in the whole nation. Also, PE herbarium, associated with China Central Television (CCTV), made a documentary about Plant Herbarium to popularize knowledge of plants for public education.
Chinese Virtual Herbarium (www.cvh.org.cn) is on-line access to herbarium specimens and botanical information in China. Currently there are data on more than 6 million specimens from 30 herbaria of China, of which 4 million specimens with images.
The Plant Photo Bank of China (PPBC: http://www. plantphoto.cn) is on-line access to living plant images. About 2.3 million images, representing 459 families, 3,721 genera and 21,123 species have been gathered. 600,000 photos have been added this year. The page views amounted to 5.7 million PV.
