On September 24, the side event "the Application and Innovation of Networked Monitoring Systems in the Management of Natural Protected Areas" of the 5th World Congress of Biosphere Reserves was held in Hangzhou. Organized by the Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IBCAS) and the Biodiversity Committee of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and co-organized by the Institute of Zoology of CAS and the International Society of Zoological Sciences, the meeting brought together nearly 100 participants from seven countries, including Indonesia, Kenya, and Brazil.

The side event was co-chaired by Prof. FENG Xiaojuan, Deputy Director-General of the Institute of Botany, and Prof. XIAO Zhishu of the Institute of Zoology. In her opening remarks, Prof. FENG Xiaojuan briefly introduced the Institute of Botany's achievements in biodiversity monitoring. She noted that the event aimed to explore new paradigms for multi-element, full-coverage biodiversity monitoring, and to advance the development and application of smart protected area management platforms, so as to provide scientific support for global biodiversity governance.

Nine speakers presented networked-biodiversity monitoring practices at regional, national, and global scales. Prof. FENG Xiaojuan gave a systematical overview of the progress and integrated impacts of the CAS Biodiversity Monitoring and Research Network (Sino BON), which has established systematic monitoring from forest canopy to below-ground multi-trophic levels. Sino BON achieved significant breakthroughs in understanding species migration mechanisms and biodiversity maintenance theories, and provided scientific evidence for national policies such as the ten-year fishing ban in the Yangtze River. Prof. SHEN Xiaoli from the Institute of Botany presented the Qianjiangyuan National Park integrated biodiversity monitoring platform as an example, demonstrating the effectiveness of the "space-air-ground" integrated monitoring network in tracking biodiversity composition, distribution, and dynamics, highlighted its strong support for park construction and management.

In addition, Prof. CAO Lei from the Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, Prof. XIAO Zhishu from the Institute of Zoology, Prof. HUANG Hui from the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, Assoc. Prof. LI Xueyou from the Kunming Institute of Zoology, Prof. SHAN Guihua from the Computer Network Information Center, Prof. WAN Huawei from the Satellite Application Center for Ecology and Environment, Ministry of Ecology and Environment (MEE), and Mr. ZHANG Xiang introduced networked monitoring of birds, mammals, rare and endangered wildlife and coral reefs, remote-sensing supervision of critical ecological spaces, and the development of a visual analysis platform for migratory bird movements.

In his concluding remarks, Mr. LIU Ning, First-Level Inspector of the Department of Natural Ecological Protection of the MEE, acknowledged CAS's achievements in networked biodiversity monitoring and research. He expressed hope that scientific programs—including those under the Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme—at regional, national, and global levels will strengthen capacity-building for biodiversity conservation and provide scientific support for building a harmonious coexistence between humanity and nature.

The 5th World Congress of Biosphere Reserves is the broadest, largest and most influential conference within the UNESCO MAB Programme. Convened once every decade, this year's congress is the first to be held in China and in Asia, attracting approximately 4,000 delegates from more than 150 countries and regions. More than 10 staff members from the Institute of Botany attended the congress. Among them, researchers including Prof. LIU Lingli, Prof. BAI Yongfei, Senior Engineers WU Dongxiu and LI Yonggeng gave presentations and participated in roundtable discussions at related parallel forums and side events.
