On June 23, the French Embassy in China and the Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IBCAS), jointly inaugurated the "Biodiversity Garden" in a ceremony in Beijing.
Mr. Bertrand Lortholary, French Ambassador to China welcomed Ms. WU Yan, Deputy Director of the Bureau of International Cooperation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and Prof. YANG Wenqiang, Deputy Director-General of IBCAS. Representatives from the CAS Headquarter, IBCAS, as well as other distinguished guests also attended the event. Ambassador Lortholary expressed his gratitude for the professionalism and craftsmanship demonstrated by IBCAS throughout the design and construction of the garden. He emphasized that the project is a proactive response to the "Green Embassy" initiative launched by the the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It also aligns closely with the priority areas of Sino-French scientific and technological cooperation identified at the 15th Joint Committee for Science and Technology between France and China, and supports the shared agenda of addressing global challenges.
Prof. YANG Wenqiang introduced the history, research directions, and achievements of IBCAS. He highlighted ongoing Sino-French collaborative projects, including the development of the Sino-French Joint Laboratory of Grapes and Wine (LIA Innogrape). He emphasized that the implementation of the biodiversity garden project has broadened the scope of Sino-French cooperation and initiated new vitality into bilateral collaboration in biodiversity conservation. He expressed hope that this project would serve as a catalyst for deepening future cooperation between the two countries in this field.
To commemorate the opening of the Biodiversity Garden, Ambassador Lortholary, Ms. WU Yan, Prof. YANG Wenqiang, and Mr. Nicolas Pillerel, Minister-Counselor for Cultural, Educational, and Scientific Affairs at the French Embassy, planted a Maclura tricuspidata, symbolizing Sino-French friendship, in the garden.
During the event, Prof. DAI Zhanwu from IBCAS was awarded the Palmes Académiques by the French Embassy for his significant contributions to Sino-French academic collaboration. The Palmes Académiques is one of the highest honors in French academia and education, established by National Assembly President Edgar Faure on October 4, 1955. It recognizes individuals worldwide who have made outstanding contributions to cultural and educational fields and have advanced the development and dissemination of French culture, arts, and education.
Representatives from embassies and international organizations based in China, as well as from domestic research institutes and universities witnessed this successful demonstration of biodiversity conservation and international cooperation. This event highlights the leadership role played by the IBCAS in promoting international collaboration—from theoretical research to practical conservation—and its active participation in global governance in the field of biodiversity.
