Recently, the University of Bordeaux in France conferred Prof. LI Shaohua from Institute of Botany, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the honorary degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Docteur Honoris Causa) in recognition of his achievements in the field of grapevine scientific research and genetic breeding, as well as his contributions to the Sino-French scientific cooperation and academic exchanges in the field of grapevine and wine.
Prof. LI Shaohua has primarily focused on studying the genetics of grape quality and key gene mining, exploring the origins the grapevine evolution and domestication, investigating cold-resistant and heat-resistant mechanisms. He has also been engaged in the collection and evaluation of grape germplasm resources and breeding and its industrialization. He has published over 170 research papers in the international journals and led his team in developing nine high-quality early-ripening table grape varieties and five cold-resistant wine grape varieties, which have been widely cultivated and promoted. For more than a decade, Prof. LI Shaohua and his team have collaborated scientifically with the Institute of Grape and Wine research (ISVV) of the University of Bordeaux and the French National Institute for Agriculture, Food and Environment Research (INRAE). In 2018, IBCAS along with the University of Bordeaux and two other research institutions, jointly established the Sino-French Joint Laboratory of Grapes and Wine (LIA Innogrape), with Prof. LI serving as its first Chinese Director.
The title "Doctor Honoris Causa" in France Universities was officially established by decree of the Third Republic of France on June 26, 1918, and is one of the oldest and noblest honors and traditions of French universities. It is the highest honor bestowed by universities in recognition of the outstanding achievements of French or international figures who have made outstanding contributions to the art, literature, science and technology. Prof. LI is the third Chinese scholar in the history of the University of Bordeaux to be awarded the honorary doctorate.
