The Species Survival Commission (SSC) of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) co-hosted the 5th SSC Leaders Meeting in Abu Dhabi on October 25-28, 2024. This conference attracted over 300 global species conservation experts who jointly issued a significant declaration, emphasizing "Saving Species Sustains Life," highlighting the importance of species conservation for human well-being, climate stability, and the global economy. They called for increased global efforts to protect biodiversity and discussed urgently needed integrated solutions.

During the conference, over 120 sessions were held, covering every cycle of the core framework for species conservation (assessment-planning-action), with a full day dedicated to discussing one of its components. The agenda included more than 20 plenary sessions, as well as numerous workshops, panel discussions, thematic discussions, and training sessions, aimed at sharing the lessons learned by SSC leaders over the past four years and throughout the 80-year history of the SSC as a whole.
The IUCN SSC China Plant Specialist Group (CPSG) and the IUCN SSC China Species Specialist Group (ChSSG) participated in this grand event.

The SSC CPSG was awarded the "SSC Chair's Citation Excellence" for its outstanding contributions to the implementation of the Species Strategic Plan during the 2021-2023 period.
Established in 1997, the CPSG is one of the first national-level species expert groups established by the SSC, and is dedicated to organising Chinese botanists to support government departments and the public in conserving plant diversity and promoting the development of plant diversity conservation in China by assessing the endangered status of species, identifying priority species for conservation, and recommending conservation countermeasures, etc.
The CPSG has been led by researchers from the Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IBCAS) since its inception. Currently, Dr. QIN Haining and Dr. JIN Xiaohua from IBCAS are the co-chairs of the 7th CPSG, and the current group has 98 members from 68 institutions, including research institutes, universities, botanical gardens (museums), and nature reserves across China.
Under the joint leadership of the two co-chairs and the collective efforts of all expert group members, the CPSG has promoted and completed a series of plant diversity conservation tasks from 2021 to 2023 and their efforts have significantly propelled the implementation of the Species Strategic Plan.
