Held every four years, the IUCN Congress (World Conservation Congress, WCC) is the world's largest conservation event. It brought together leaders from government, civil society, indigenous peoples' organisations, business and academia to determine the world's most pressing environmental and development challenges, and actions to address them. One of the functions of Congress is to elect the President, Treasurer, Regional Councillors and Chairs of Commissions, who will make up the IUCN Council.
On 8 September 2021, Members of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) elected Ms. Razan Al Mubarak as the new President at the ongoing IUCN World Conservation Congress in Marseille. Prof. MA Keping from the Institute of Botany, the Vice Chair and Secretary General of Biodiversity Committee, Chinese Academy of Sciences, was selected as one of the Regional Councillors.
There are 28 IUCN Regional Councillors, including five for South and East Asia. The other four councilors from the region are Kazuaki HOSHINO (Japan), Vivek MENON (India), Hasna Jasimuddin MOUDUD (Bangladesh), Jong Soo YOON (Republic of Korea).
He served as a Councillor from 2007 to 2012 and become the Chair of Asia Regional Members Committee (ARMC) of IUCN in 2015. He actively participated in various IUCN affairs, and made great efforts to promote cooperation and exchanges between international and domestic IUCN members.
