Regional Meeting of IUCN Members in Asia Held Virtually

The Regional Meeting of IUCN Members in Asia was held virtually on August 19, 2021. The meeting was attended by over 150 participants, including IUCN President ZHANG Xinsheng, Members from Bangladesh, China, India, Japan, Malaysia, Korea, Nepal, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam and other Asian countries, and IUCN staff from Headquarters and the Asia region. Prof. MA Keping, Chair of the Asia Regional Members’ Committee & Professor from Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, presided over the meeting.

The aim of the Regional (Virtual) Meeting of IUCN Members in Asia was to introduce candidates for the positions of IUCN President, Treasurer, Regional Councillors from South and East Asia, and Chairman of the World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA), as well as to inform Asian Members about the upcoming World Conservation Congress in early September.

IUCN President Mr. ZHANG Xinsheng and IUCN Asia Regional Director Dr. Dindo CAMPILAN delivered welcome remarks. Three candidates for IUCN president, candidates for IUCN Treasurer, Councillors and WCPA Chair made self-introduction and talked about the work plan.

At the end of the meeting, Prof. MA Keping concluded by thanking all who contributed their efforts to make the meeting a success. He hoped that IUCN Members in Asia would actively participate in the upcoming WCC in Marseille, and form a joint force to make Asia's voice heard and contribution made.
