On March 26, 2021,Meeting of the IUCN Asia Regional Members’ Committee was held online. More than 40 representatives from 17 countries including China, Pakistan, Malaysia, Japan, Laos, Nepal, Myanmar, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Asia Office, Headquarter of IUCN attended the meeting. Secretary General of Biodiversity Committee Prof. MA Keping, from Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IBCAS) held the meeting as the Chair of Asia Regional Members’ Committee.
IUCN Director General Dr. Bruno Oberle acknowledged Ms. Aban Marker Kabraji for her contribution to the development of IUCN Asia. He pointed out that membership was one of the core work of IUCN, and the membership work progressed well in Asia. He looked forward to visiting the Asian office in Bangkok and visiting the Asian member countries. He also emphasized the importance of the possible negative impact of post-epidemic economic recovery plans on nature. IUCN should actively appeal to the international community and national governments to formulate natural and environment-friendly economic recovery plans.
Ms. Aban Mark-Kabraji expressed her appreciation for everyone's support and briefly shared the history of the Asia office and her continued interest in IUCN related work in the future.
Dr. Dindo Campionan, the incoming Regional Director of IUCN Asia, delivered his inaugural speech and briefly shared his vision for the future work of the IUCN in Asia, including membership management and how to best utilize the strengths of the IUCN to contribute to green development in Asia.
Dr Enrique Lahmann, the Global Director of IUCN Union Development Group and discussion,updated the preparation of the next IUCN World Conservation Congress. Due to the COVID-19, the meeting was postponed to be held during September 3-11, 2021 in Marseille, France.
Mr. Malik Amin Aslam, Prof. Amran Hamzah, Prof. Masahiko Horie, Mr. Mangal Man Shakya and representatives from Pakistan, Banladesh, Viet Nam, Nepal, Japan, India etc. expressed their grateful to Ms. Aban Marker-Kabraji and welcome to Dr. Dindo Campilan. Participants shared their progress, suggested to promote communication among members, Asia office and the Headquarter to improve IUCN in Asia and worldwide.
