On July 13th -15th, workshop on Mapping Asia Plants (MAP): Northeast Asia, Central Asia (North Asia) and West Asia was successfully held in Harbin. The workshop was hosted by Biodiversity Committee, Chinese Academy of Sciences (BC-CAS), and supported by School of Forestry, Northeast Forestry University. Prof. Keping Ma, the Secretary General of BC-CAS from the Intitute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, chaired the workshop, and Prof. Long Sun the Vice Dean of School of Forestry delivered a welcome speech.
Prof. Keping Ma introduced the background, work plan and priorities of MAP. Current focus of MAP was emphasized again, that is working on a plant checklist country by country for Asia and species distribution database associated with the checklists based on existing data. And the achievements in biodiversity informatics worldwide were also shared with the participants.
Presentations on “Flora, checklists and occurrence data for the vascular and spore plants in Tajikistan, based on Floras (1957-1991) and new records published in scientific journals in last 25 years” and “Checklists, literatures and occurrence data: Biodiversity information of vascular plants in Japan”were given by academician Hikmat Hisoriev from Tajikstan and Prof. Motomi Ito from Japan respectively. Plant checklists and their distribution and research progress were shared.
The progress of Northeast Asia, Central Asia, North Asia and West Asia were reported by the coordinators for each area respectively and discussed at the workshop. A preliminary plant checklist and distribution database has been built for Northeast Asia, North Asia and Central Asia, and a good progress has been made in data collection in West Asia. The most important flora books of each country were confirmed and publication information of flora books was updated by the experts at the workshop. The division of different parts of Asia, procedures of cleaning plant checklists, and the scales for documenting species distribution were further discussed. A visit to Komarov Botanical Institute of Russian Academy of Sciences for further data collection was proposed and agreed.
After the workshop, participants visited the Liangshui National Nature Reserve and the 9-ha broadleaved Korean pine mixed forest plot of Xiaoxing`an Mountains in Heilongjiang.
