On May 5.2015, the Honorary Professor Awarding Ceremony for Professor F. Stuart Chapin, III of the University of Alaska Fairbanks, US was held at Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IBCAS). Prof. Kong Chong, Deputy Director of IBCAS hosted the ceremony. Prof. Jingyun Fang gave the welcome speech.
Following the ceremony,Prof. Chapin gave a lecture titled Linking ecosystem science to action in a warming world. In his lecture, Professor Chapin discussed how global climate warming affects ecosystem services and the sustainability of human society. He introduced the concept of Earth Stewardship: active shaping of pathways of social and ecological change for benefit of ecosystems and society. He identified three general approaches to stewardship: 1) Reduce rates of preventable changes, such as reduce carbon emissions and reduce threats of stream pollution; 2) Adapt to and shape changes that cannot be prevented, such as prepare to live in a warmer climate, and expect droughts and floods; 3) Avoid or escape unsustainable traps, such as develop renewable energy. Professor Chapin also pointed out that collaborations between China, U.S. and European Union could greatly help to reduce rate of climate change and shape the pathway of inevitable environmental change.
Professor Chapin is world-renowned for his pioneering work in the field of plant nutritional adaptations, climate change and sustainability. He was elected as a member of National Academy of Sciences in 2004, and the president of Ecological Society of America in 2011. He authored more than 10 books, including the classic textbook on ecosystem ecology: Principle of Terrestrial Ecosystem Ecology, and published about 500 peer papers, including nearly 30 papers in Science, Nature and PNAS. Professor Chapin serves on the editorial boards of several high profile journals such as PNAS.
