Dr. Wenli Chen and Dr. Ran Wei, researchers from Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IB-CAS) conducted a biodiversity survey in the rain forest of Gn. Halimum Salak National Park, Java, Indonesia from 20 Oct. to 8 Nov.2014. The 20-day field expedition is a part of the project “Joint Biodiversity Inventory of the Higher Plants in Indonesia and Collaborative Training of Indonesian Young Scientist”.

Java Island is believed to have been formed by the collision of the Asian Plate and the Australian Plate in the Miocene, and subsequent volcanic activities. This island neighbors on the Wallacea, meaning that it harbors a high floristic diversity. It is also the type locality for many plant species. During the joint field trip, about 491 specimen collections with ca. 900 DNA materials were gathered, including the main representatives from ferns and seed plants dwelling in the Southeast Asian and Australian tropics. The collections were shared between Herbarium Bogoriense (BO) and the Beijing National Herbarium (PE).

This biodiversity survey in Indonesia is supported by the joint project between IB-CAS and Herbarium Bogoriense, Research Center for Biology-LIPI of Indonesia. It is also an important component of the memo signed between IB-CAS and LIPI in April this year. The achievements of this project will shed new light on the further studies of the origin and evolution history of Asian tropical floras, and will promote a deep cooperation in the fields of plant research between China and Indonesia.
