As a kind of very important ornamental shrub in temperate area, lilacs have a long breeding history and rich cultural accumulation in Europe and North America. It is more necessary than before to protect breeder’s right owing to more new varieties coming into being and considerable lilac transactions in the world. Study on horticultural taxonomy of lilacs started in Shi Lei’s research team in 2007. A large database of lilac was developed since then including 500 varieties and Test Guideline of DUS – Syringa was subsequently published as Chinese industry standard in 2009. The further discussion on drafted guideline was initiated in International Union For The Protection Of New Varieties Of Plant (UPOV) since 2010 and final edition was adopted by UPOV in 2014. It will be used as a criterion for breeder’s right protection and dispute arbitration of lilacs across UPOV members. This is the fourth UPOV guideline drafted by Chinese experts and the first guideline come from Chinese Academy of Sciences and demonstrated our substantial contribution to the world intellectual protection.
