Recently a doctoral research proposal of a student from Institute of Botany received research grant from International Association for Plant Taxonomy (IAPT).
Nawal Shrestha, a student from Nepal was enrolled as a PhD scholar at State Key Laboratory of Systematic and Evolutionary Botany in 2011. At present, he is doing his research under the supervision of Professor Zhang Xianchun. His work is focused on systematic studies of primitive vascular plants of the Himalaya region. The proposed title of his work is “Taxonomic revision of Lycopodiaceae P. Beauv. ex Mirb. of the Pan Himalaya”. With regard to the taxonomy of the Himalayan Lycopodiaceae, there have been very few studies carried out until now. The taxonomic status of many species of this family is still uncertain and how many species occur in the Pan Himalaya region is yet not known. With an aim of exploring little known taxonomy of this family, he will be doing a comprehensive study of Lycopodiaceae on morphological and anatomical basis. The work is expected to be a significant contribution to the Flora of Pan Himalaya project.
Prior to his PhD work, Nawal stayed at Graduate University of Chinese Academy of Sciences for four months for the Intensive Chinese Language and Culture course. He completed the course with outstanding grades and received an honorary Excellent Student Award at the end of the semester. After returning to the institute, he developed research proposal with the help of his supervisor and submitted to IAPT. With regard to the quality of his proposed work, IAPT Grants Committee selected his project for annual IAPT grants. He received the coveted Research Grants in Plant Systematics award 2012 in the amount of US$ 1000. He is the first graduate students from IBCAS to receive fund from International Association for Plant Taxonomy and also one of the first applicants from China.
Plant Systematics Research Fund was established by IAPT in 2009. Since its establishment, IAPT has been providing research funds tostimulate research in plant taxonomy world-wide, with emphasis on supporting students and investigators in developing countries. The students who receive IAPT research grants, in addition, also receive a free IAPT membership and an online access to Taxon journal.
