US Delegation Visited Institute of Botany

On Apr.3, a delegation led by Dr. Gerard Donnelly, President and CEO of the Morton Arboretum(Illinois, USA), and Mr. William A. McNamara, Executive Director of the Quarryhill Botanical Garden (California, USA) visited Institute of Botany (IB). Dr. GE Song, Deputy Director of IBCAS met with them. Dr Nicole Cavender and Mr Kris Bachtell from Morton Arboretum, Dr. WANG Liangsheng, Dr. TANG Yudan and Dr. LENG Jing from IBCAS were present at the meeting.

The main purpose of the visit is to learn about the current situation of Chinese Botanic Gardens and explore possible cooperation on tree conservation, introduction and domestication. Dr. GE Song extended a warm welcome to the delegation and gave a brief introduction on the history, people and researches of IBCAS. Dr. TANG Yudan discribed details on the research, features and protection of threatened tree species of Beijing Botanic Garden and Western China-Alpine Botanic Garden. The two sides had discussion on issues of mutual interest as plant taxonomy, Flora of China, the planning and development of Institute of Botany. He also expressed a strong interest in cooperating with the Herbarium and Botanic Garden of IBCAS.

The Morton Arboretum is located at Illinois, United States, covering an area of about 1700 acres (690 hectares). It is an outdoor museum, with about 3,500 species of woody plants. It has a large collection of arbors, shrubs and vines.

After the meeting, the delegation visited Peony Park, Oak Park, Perennial Flower Garden located at the Botanic Garden.
