In order to strengthen the cooperation and scientific exchanges between China and South America, a botanical delegation from three Chinese institutions at the invitation of the Cordoba National University visited Argentina in February, 2012. The members of the delegation consist of Profs. Chen Zhiduan and Zhang Zhiyun of the Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IB, CAS), Prof. Zhang Shouzhou of Shenzhen Fairy Lake Botanical Garden, CAS, and Prof. Fu Chengxin of the College of Life Sciences, Zhejiang University.
While in Argentina, the Chinese delegation visited the Instituto Multidisciplinariodo de Biologia Vegetal, Universidad Nacional de, Cordoba and the Instituto de Botánica Darwinion in Buenos Aires and conducted several workshops with the botanists there. The Chinese colleagues gave a brief introduction of their institutions and reported the research development in the areas of plant biodiversity, conservation, systematics, and evolutionary. After the meeting, both sides are very interested in the further collaboration, particularly with respect to training courses, symposia, scholastic exchange, including professors, post doctoral fellows and graduate students, and exchange of plant specimens and publications. Afterward, the Chinese and Argentina botanists carried out a field expedition to Cordoba, San Louis, Iguazu, and Tukuman Provinces of Argentina. As a result, about 160 plant specimens, 70 molecular samples, and seeds of 90 plant species were collected. Most these plants are endemic to South America or Argentina and they are not present or very rare in China. These collections and material have very important scientific values for the research and cultivation in China. Both sides are planning to take substantial steps in the coming years to achieve the objectives outlined above.
This project was financially supported by the Bureau of International Cooperation, CAS.
