The awarding ceremony for CAS Visiting Professor was held at the Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences on Jan 4th, 2012. Dr. ZHANG Lixin, Deputy Director of the Institute awarded Professor Harald Schneider from Natural History Museum, UK the honor of “CAS Visiting Professorship for Senior International Scientist”.
On behalf of the Institute, Dr. Zhang extended congratulations to Professor Schneider for joining the “CAS Visiting Professorship program”, and wish he to achieve more progress during the stay in China. Professor Schneider gave presentations titled " Challenges and Opportunities of Plant Systematics in the 21st Century: Towards a Comprehensive Classification of Land Plants”. He briefed the history and development of land plants classification, indicating the latest land plants classification system combining cladistics, phylogenetics and morphological taxonomy. At last, Prof. Schneider attached great importance to the combination of evidences from genetics, cytology, anatomy and ecology etc. into plant classification.
Professor Schneider is a senior scientist in the Natural History Museum, London. He is also the member of the Linnean Society, London. He mainly works on the evolutionary biology of ferns and other seed-free land plants. He was awarded with several honors, such as Royal Society Conference Travel Awards (2007, 2008, 2010), Edgar T Wherry Award of the Pteridological Section of the Botanical Society America (2000), etc. He published several high quality academic papers on international academic journals: Nature, Molecular Ecology, Plos One, etc.
Professor Schneider will work with Professor ZHANG Xianchun at the Institute of Botany for one year.
