Professor Victoria Sork, Dean of Department of life sciences of the University of California at Los Angeles, USA (UCLA, hereinafter) and Professor LIN Chentao paid visit to the Institute of Botany, CAS (IOB, hereinafter) on Oct.17, 2011 to discuss cooperation between UCLA and the Institute of Botany. CAO Jinghua, Deputy Director of Bureau of International Cooperation, CAS and Prof. ZHANG Lixin, Deputy Director of IOB met with them.
First of all, CAO Jinhua extended a warm welcome to Prof. Sork and Prof. Lin. Then he pointed out the unique advantages of CAS in scientific researches, and expressed the wishes to build cooperation with UCLA on a mutual benefit. ZHANG Lixin gave a brief introduction on the history, people and researches of the IOB Prof. Sork gave a brief description of the UCLA too. UCLA was founded in 1947. It is a comprehensive university with education creativity and cultural diversity, ranking 25th in the world currently. It is the cradle for professionals of commercial and financial, high technology industries, film and art in USA. It has the most extensive areas in cultivating cutting-edge talents throughout the United States, with more than 6 colleges and 50 departments currently, and about 25,000 students enrolled, among which Asian students are 26%.
Prof. Zhang pointed out that in view of the strong advantage of UCLA in the field of life sciences, the two institutions can explore broad cooperation on such specific areas of interest as plant ecology and systematic and evolutionary botany, by ways of applying for joint projects, exchanging graduate students, and seeking common funding for postdoctoral research. Professor Sork agreed with Prof. Zhang’s point of view. She also hoped to promote the cooperation in the field of botany in further.
Prof. Liu Chunming, director of CAs key laboratory of Molecular Physiology, Prof. Kong Hongzhi, deputy director of the State Key Laboratory of Systematic and Evolutionary Botany and Prof. Zhang Qibing, deputy director of the State Key Laboratory of Vegetation and Environmental Change described their research directions of key laboratories respectively. Prof. Jing Haichun, head of Research Governance Office and Prof. Chen Zhiduan attended the meeting too.
After the meeting, Prof. Kong Hongzhi showed Prof. Sork and Prof. Lin around the State Key Laboratory of Systematic and Evolutionary Botany.
