Workshop on Scientific Publishing 2010 was staged on September 6 to 8 in Beijing.
Co-hosted by Journal of Integrative Plant Biology (JIPB) run by the Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences and the National Laboratory of Protein Engineering and Plant Genetic Engineering under Peking University, the workshop attracted about 200 teachers, editors and students from research institutes and universities.
Prof. William Lucas, deputy editor-in-chief of the journal The Plant Cell and a Distinguished Professor of Plant Biology of University of California, Davis, gave speeches on standards of paper writing and operations of leading international journals.He also discussed the high ethical standards that should be maintained in paper writing.
Prof. Lucas stressed that science is a kind of public knowledge wealth that belongs to the whole society. For the young students who are the future of science and the hope of human being, a better understanding of paper writing and scientific publishing would help them avoid detours and building bridges between scholars, which is also the purpose of the workshop.
Dr Mark Robertson, Wiley-Blackwell's Asia Pacific publishing director, introduced the standards and techniques in scientific publishing from the perspective of the press.
Bearing in mind the problems and misunderstanding of Chinese authors in paper writing, Dr LI Dangsheng, deputy editor-in-chief of the journal Cell Research, gave his suggestions on paper writing improvement.
Ms HE Ping, executive director of JIPB, introduced the recent development of the journal and gave instructions for manuscript submissions to JIPB.
