Professor Peter H. Rave won the CAS Award for International Cooperation in Science and Technology for 2009 at CAS’ annual conference held January 27, Beijing.

Established in 2007, the CAS Award for International Cooperation in Science and Technology is to honor those eminent international experts with outstanding contributions to China's global cooperation in science and technology. It is aimed to encourage more efforts in this respect that will lead to the enhancement of CAS innovation capacity and the improvement of its research performance, education and training, management and reputations among the international community. Till now there are 8 international experts won the award. Peter H. Raven is the first one international expert in biology research field.

Professor Peter H. Raven, a leading botanist and advocate of conservation and biodiversity with a notably international outlook, is president of the Missouri Botanical Garden. He is member of the National Academy of Sciences (1977), and of the academies of sciences in over 20 countries, including CAS. Dr. Raven made outstanding contributions to the plant evolution and plant systematics research. He proposed the concept of co-evolution; initiated the studies on the effects of the Plate Tectonics upon biogeography and plant evolution, and much more.

Dr. Raven is the first person to propose and organize the extensive cooperation between the biologists of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and American botanists. He has been named honorary directors or academic committee members by several CAS institutes. He proposed the Flora of China project (revised edition of the Flora Reipublicae Popularis Sinicae in English) in 1979, and carried it on since 1989. As the foreign co-editor of the Flora of China, he has played critical and indispensable role in proposing the project, compiling book series, and raising funding. Flora of China is a Key joint international cooperation project between the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Missouri Botanical Garden (USA). This project is revising over 30,000 vascular plant species, leading to a contemporary, 50-volume account on all the plants of China. Around 10 million US dollars were sponsored by the American partners for expenditure of the Chinese researchers in foreign countries, joint editorial committee meetings, publications and foreign collaborators’ costs.

"Flora of China" will be completely published by the end of the year 2012, and by then it will be the largest Flora in English. The Flora of China project accelerated the internationalization of Chinese botanical research, improved the recognition of Chinese botany and Chinese plants, and has shown great global influence.

As an international academic advisor of the State Key Laboratory of Systematic and Evolutionary Botany, He felt strong concern for the scientific research and management of the Key laboratory and gave some constructive advices.
