January 13, 2010, the opening ceremony of the Key Laboratory of Photobiology, the Chinese Academy of Science was held in Institute of Botany, CAS (IOB). Xiping Niu, the secretary of IOB administrative committee, chaired the meeting. Dr. Keping Ma, the director of IOB, academician Tingyun Kuang, the assistant of director, Liang Hong and Yunfeng Li, and some researchers of IOB attended the meeting. Dr. Kang Chong, vice-director of IOB sent a congratulations letter.
Keping Ma gave a brief review on the development of State and CAS key laboratorys in IOB in the past years. He expressed thanks for the contribution of many scientists including academician Peisong TANG and Tingyun KUANG.. He also stressed that an excellent group was important for the development of the key laboratory. Taking the establishment of the key laboratory as a new start and a new chance, IOB shall promote the integration of basic research and applied research, and make more significant contribute to promoting better and faster economic and social development.
Tingyun KUANG also gave a review of the history for constructing the key laboratory. She said that photosynthesis research is now on the convergence of international scientific hotspot and national development demand. The research of key laboratory should aim at the cutting-edge science in the world, and meet national development demand as well.
In the letter of congratulations, Dr. Kang Chong hope that the two CAS Key labs in IOB will strengthen scientific communication and make great achievement together in future.
Subsequently, the employment decision was released by Dr. Keping MA, which appointed academician Tingyun KUANG as the Director of the Scientific Committee, and Professor Lixin ZHANG as the Laboratory Director.
On behalf of the key lab, Dr. Lixin ZHANG gave a talk entitled "The Past and the Future of the Key Laboratory of Photobiology, CAS". He also made a strategic plan for development of the Key laboratory. The key laboratory will focus on the key issues of the solar energy bio-transformation and its application to agriculture and energy .
The research of the key laboratory will focus on: 1) the structure and function of photosynthetic membrane pigment-protein complex, and related bionics research, 2) photosynthetic membrane lipid biosynthesis, structure and function, 3) light signal transduction and the molecular mechanism of photosynthetic functional regulation, 4) algae photosynthesis and hydrogen production research, and 5) the molecular mechanism of photosynthesis adaptation to the environment.
The key lab was formerly a research center of IOB. In recent five years, it obrained 48 research National and CAS, and published 82 scientific research papers on international journals, including Nature, Plant Cell, Plant Physiology, The Journal of Biological Chemistry, Biochimica et Biophysica Acta and etc.
