"Key Laboratory of Biodiversity Informatics of IOB" and the "IOB -ESRI China (Beijing)  Joint GIS Laboratory" was established and held its opening ceremony

In order to promote the development of biodiversity informatics in China and the transformation of the scientific achievements in the discipline, the "Key Laboratory of Biodiversity Informatics of the Institute of Botany(IOB)" and the "IOB,CAS -ESRI China (Beijing) Co., Ltd. Joint GIS Laboratory" was established and held its opening ceremony on February 3.

The opening ceremony was chaired by XiJia ZHAO,theSecretary of the Party Committee of IOB.  the Director of the Institute Prof. Keping MA,, he Director of Wildlife Conservation Department of the State Forestry Administration Chunling WANG, the director assistant of the Institute of Microorganism Prof. Juncai MM, the Director of Network Information Center of the Institute of Zoology Prof. Liqiang JI, and the President of ESRI (Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc.) China (Beijing) Co., Ltd. Ning HE, the Vice President and Chief Consultant Xiao-Bing Cai as well as directors of the centers of the Institute of Botany attended the signing and inauguration ceremony.

First of all, the general director of the IOB Prof. Keping MA delivered a passionate speech. He pointed out that the biodiversity informatics was an emerging discipline, carrying the responsibility of dissemination and sharing of the information on biodiversity. The United Nations declared 2010 to be the International Year of Biodiversity. The world was invited to take action in 2010 to safeguard the variety of life on earth: biodiversity. On the other hand, with years of accumulation of scientific researches on biodiversity and other related fields, IOB had laid a solid foundation to integrate the multi-source information. In this context, the establishment of new lab had a far-reaching significance. The president of ESRI China (Beijing) Co., Ltd. Mr. Ning HE on behalf of the company expressed his positive attitude and enthusiasm to the cooperation with IOB and also extended the wishes to carry out deeply wider co-operation on the basis of the joint laboratory.

The director of Documentation and Information Center of IOB, Prof. Jinzhong CUI was appointed as the director of the Key Laboratory of the Biodiversity Informatics, Prof. Haining QIN was appointed as the acting (executive) deputy director and Profs. Ke GUO, Yu JIA and Zheng'an LiIU were appointed as the deputy directors. The general director Prof. Keping MA, on behalf of the Institute together with the president of ESRI China Ning HE signed the cooperation agreement and jointly unveiled the Key laboratory plate. At the same time, ESRI China (Beijing) Co., Ltd. presented the ArcGIS legitimate packaged software and related documents to the Institute.

After the opening ceremony, lab director Dr. Jinzhong CUI made the report entitled "the basis and development of the laboratory ". He presented the development plan of the laboratory in details from four aspects, the background, building foundation and development goals and ideas,  and hoped that through the leading role of the director of academic committee of the laboratory Prof. Baoping YAN and the academic leader Prof. Keping MA, to combine the Documentation and Information Center, the Plant Ecology Center, the Plant System Center and the Botanical Garden to set up and push the biodiversity information platform to an even higher international recognition.

Prof. Keping MA introduced the latest international progress of biodiversity informatics using "Biodiversity Informatics: the Content and Progress" as the report title. He said that biodiversity informatics was an emerging interdiscipline; neither computer information science nor biodiversity was dispensable. Xiao-Bing Cai, the vice president of ESRI China subsequently made the report entitled "GIS: Design Common Future". In his view, GIS has changed the world and its application has been infiltrated into the various fields. He also stressed that while developing the technology and improving its own functions, GIS should be actively involved in the development of more disciplines to provide more business solutions and to fulfill the "geographic responsibility," and hoped by relying on the joint laboratory to carry out more researches.

Dr. Haining QIN, the acting deputy director of the laboratories through the case project, “China's Higher Plant List and the Chinese Plant Red List", described the specific application of biodiversity informatics and its relevant technologies. Finally, the Director Assistant of the Documentation and Information Center, Dr. Zheping XU taking the most influential international biodiversity e-Science platform LifeWatch as an example, focusing on the current lack of existing biodiversity database, presented an overall idea and blue prints of Chinese biodiversity e-Science platform. In the report, Dr. XU also gave the audience a detailed conceptual mode which would play a reference role on the future construction of the biodiversity e-Science infrastructure.
