The “China-UK Workshop on Plant Ecology and Conservation was hold in Institute of Botany, CAS from Jan. 28 to 30. University of Sussex (US) and Royal Botanical Gardens Kew (Kew), UK, and 4 CAS institutes, including Institutes of Botany (IOB), Kunming Institute of Botany (KIB), South China Botanical Garden (SCBG), and Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG), took part in the workshop.
This workshop aimed to not only strengthen the China-UK cooperative research in the field of plant ecology and conservation but also promote the exchange of staffs and jointly training of young scientists and postgraduate and Ph.D. students. Prof. MA Keping from IOB, Prof. LI Dezhu from KIB, Prof. CHEN Jin from XTBG, Prof. XIA Nianhe from SCBG, Prof. Hugh Pritchard from Kew and Prof. Michael Hutchings from US were present at the workshop. Participants discussed the science issues in the field of plant ecology and conservation, and reached a broad consensus on priorities of joint research and training.
The following key areas or themes for the promotion of the comprehensive cooperation were put forwarded at the end of the workshop: 1, ecosystem services and poverty alleviation; 2, biodiversity and its adaptation and mitigation to climate change; 3, rare genetic resources and ex situ conservation in Botanic Gardens; 4 Herbarium networking and taxonomy development; 5, seed biology and ecology; 6, biodiversity informatics; 7, joint training of students and academic exchanges. Delegates agreed to establish a Sino-UK Collaborative Programme on Ecology and Conservation, and CAS biodiversity committee office will serve as contact unit for the daily work.
Officials from Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), State Forestry Administration (SFA), Research Council of UK (RCUK) and British Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) attended the workshop. They showedgreat interest in the cooperation issues, and introduced the related project plans and possible funding sources.
