Nov.9 –The Deputy Director General of IUCN,Dr William Jackson visited IOB(Institute of Botany) accompanied by IUCN Asian Regional Programme Coordinator, Dr. Kent Jingfors, and Zhuang Hao, IUCN China Programme Coordinator.
Deputy Director of IOB, Deputy Director and Secretary General of Biodiversity Committee, CAS, IUCN appointed councillor, Prof. Dr. Ke-ping Ma gave a brief introduction on biodiversity-related projects currently carried out in China and the development of IUCN in China. Lots of the biodiversity projects are promoted by Biodiversity Committee of CAS in China, including Species 2000 China, the Red List Of Threatened Species, Chinese Virtual Herbarium, Chinese Natural Herbarium, Encyclopedia of Life (EOL) China, and forest biodiversity monitoring network (CForbio). Dr. Ma pointed out that IUCN, Biodiversity Committee, CAS, and IOB should seek more collaboration on biodiversity conservation research.
Dr William Jackson gave high praise to achievements of biodiversity conservation inChina. He also suggested that China should publicize widely overseas to let the world better understand China’s achievements in the protection of biodiversity. Dr. Jingfors wished that IUCN Asian seek more opportunity to work with Chinese conservation biologists and other sectors. Both sides hoped that their collaboration will enhance the influence of IUCN in China.
As one of the Chinese scientists who initiated biodiversity research in China, Dr. Ma was elected as IUCN council member for East Asia and South Asia Region and have made lots of efforts to promoting the influence of IUCN in China
