Sep 22--- the opening ceremony of a new filed station of Institute of Botany (IOB), Chinese Academy of Sciences, Research Station of Forestry Biodiversity and Climatic Change at the Gutianshan, was held at Gutianshan National Nature Reserve, Kaihua, Zhejiang, China. At the same time, the opening ceremony of a joint research center, China Reginal Climatic Research Center was held. The research center was co-sponsored by three organizations, HSBC, Earthwatch Institute and IOB.

About 20 people from IOB, HSBC, Earthwatch Institute, Wetland Management Center of State Forestey Administration, P.R.China, Standing Committee of the Zhejiang Province People’s Congress, Zhejiang Forestry Bureau, and some NGO such as WWF, TCG, CTFS, participated the ceremony.

Most research on forest and climatic change are focusing on tropical forest. While forest in subtropics also response sensitively to climatic change and there are large areas of subtropical forest in China. The Gutianshan station and the joint research center were established for doing more research on the subtropical forest.

The studies in Gutianshan station will mainly focus on mechanisms of species coexistence in subtropical forest plant communities which is important to explain the effect of biodiversity on forest ecosystem function and to monitor the effect of climate change on subtropical forest carbon pool and carbon flux. The station have 3 international cooperative projects including "Chinese Forest Biodiversity Monitoring Network (CForBio)", " Field Experiments on Forest Biodiversity and Ecosystem Functioning in Subtropical China", "Quantify and monitor carbon pools and fluxes to assess the impact of climate change on subtropical forests under different anthropogenic disturbances".

Some of research results were published on some ecological journals such as Ecology, Journal of Ecology, Oikos, Forest Ecology and Management.
