In 2018, with serving technology innovation for center, tightly around the "One-Three-Five" Strategic Planning, IOB has further expanded and deepened the international S&T cooperation, has improved the internationalization level and international influence, and enhanced the innovation ability in the related fields. This year, the institute has got 19 new international projects approved and received funding of around 11 million RMB.

In 2018, abiding by the communication plan, IOB kept active international exchange with the scholars and scientists all around the world. Altogether there are 146 scholars going abroad to conduct cooperative research and attend conferences, and 169 scholars coming to visit IOB. The scholars and scientists are also active to get involved in international affairs. To date, there are 16 scientists serving in 25 international organizations and 48 scientists in 65 international journals.

In 2018, there are 4 international conferences held by IOB, including 1st Asia-Oceania International Congress on Photosynthesis, 2018 IUCN Asia Regional Members Committee Meeting, the 3rd Tripartite Meeting of IUCN members of China, Japan and Korea and International Symposium of Mapping Asia Plants. These conferences, to some extent, provided a good platform for the institute to be known by the international universities and organizations, and also promoted further international communication. Besides, the institute has organized the “Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) Biodiversity Data Mobilization Training Workshop”, which improved the communication and development of biodiversity informatics and help set up the biodiversity data-sharing environment.

The international cooperation projects made good progress in 2018. The International project “Flora of Pan-Himalaya”, held by IOB scientists, involved with international scholars has advanced steadily. A large-scale field expedition to Xizang and more than 40 other filed investigations have been organized; two Chinese researchers were sent to UK to examine the specimens; three foreign authors visited IOB for collaborative research. In 2018, five volumes/books were compiled and will be published in 2019.

IOB further advanced the cooperation with the scientific organizations in Australia and France. Sino-Australian join project-“How do crops feel the cold” made good progress, “Improving crop yield potential under water and climatic constraints in the North China Plain and Australia’s northern grain zone” has been launched. Another Sino-Australian join project-“Development of cereal crops with improved health benefits” has been approved. The International Partnership Program of CAS-“Functional identification of candidate genes to improve grape berry quality” has started in collaboration with the French National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA) and IOB has signed the cooperation agreement to create the INNOGRAPE International Associated Laboratory with INRA, the University of Bordeaux (UBx) and Bordeaux Sciences Agro (BSA).
