In 2011, IOB put more emphasis on cooperation with the African and neighboring Asian countries. Several international cooperation projects led by the institute make good progress. The main achievements are as follows:
1. International exchange is frequent and more international scientists are introduced.
In 2011, there are 145 batch of 217 staffs visiting foreign countries and 151 batch of 233 persons coming to visit IOB, increasing 56 and 52 respectively compared to 2010. This indicates that the cooperation between IOB and international institutions is becoming more and more frquently. On the other hand, international exchanges promote the research of IOB. There are 80 SCI papers published by ways of international cooperation, accounting one third of the total papers published in 2011, among which 14 papers with SCI impact factor higher than 5, and 4 papers higher than 9.
In 2011, IOB hosted 6 senior international scientists who were awarded CAS visiting professorship, and 4 scholars from developing countries (other than China) who were sponsored by TWAS-CAS fellowship to do joint research.
2. The international influence is increasing, and several international conferences are held by IOB
The staffs in IOB are active in participating in international organizations and related activities. 31 staffs serve 70 posts in various international organizations and international journals. Currently there are 8 staffs serving as the chief editor or associated chief editor, 5 serving as councilor, members of the Board or secretary general. Two scientists from IOB, as the representatives of CAS, participating in the Ministry of Environmental Protection delegation, attended the negotiation of "Convention on Biological Diversity". Professor Keping Ma, as a member of International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN), is active in expanding the cooperation between China and IUCN. Professor Xianchun Zhang is the first member in China and the only member of International Society for Plant Taxonomy in Asia.
In 2011, IOB holds 3 international conferences: The International Workshop on Photosystem II of Photosynthesis, 2nd International Symposium on Integrative Plant Biology and Sino-German Seminar on Evolution of Plant Biology.
3. The international cooperation is deepening, and the projects initiated by IOB make good progresses
In 2011, IOB obtained 13 international cooperation projects, and the total funding for international cooperation is 9,500,000 RMB. These projects focus on the cooperation with neighboring countries in Africa and Asia in the field of environmental and plant resources.
The collaboration project "Flora of China" (English version, 24volumes) was jointly compiled by IOB and Missouri Botanical Garden. The editing and research of the manuscript has completed this year and will be totally published next year. The compilation of "Pan-Himalayan flora", initiated by IOB in 2010, have got funds from CAS, NSFC and the MOST. In 2011, the project conducted field work at the border area of the junction of China and Nepal (belonging to the southern slope of the Malaya mountains), mainly studying the different types of vegetation. More field investigations will be conducted in Nepal, Myanmar and other countries in future.
Under the support of the MOST, IOB participated in the project of Africa water action cooperated by China and United Nations. This project is mainly focusing on the protection and monitoring of ecological environment and water resources for African countries in the Nile basin. The researchers of IOB visited Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia and Sudan, preliminary understanding the situation and problems of the existing field station in the Nile basin. This has laid a good foundation for the research group's future work.
