In 2009, the Institute of Botany continued to adhere to "independence, cooperation and win-win" as the basic principles, focusing on "we-centered, self-innovation" and constantly expanding cooperation channels and strengthening the cooperation efforts. The Institute of Botany obtained 12 international cooperation projects in the year, including 3 major projects funded by national ministries and 1 major cooperative project funded by international organizations; the total funds for international cooperation exceeded 7 million yuan for the first time.
International influence is increasing
In 2009,131 researchers from the Institute of Botany visited other countries or regions, and 145 foreigners visited the Institute of Botany for investigation or cooperative research projects, among which more than 10 visits were paid for by heads of institutions abroad, including the Vice Chancellor of Sussex University, Vice Chairman of the Royal Society, as well as the Secretary-General of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences. Through international cooperation and communication, the Institute of Botany published 12 papers in journals with SCI impact factors > 5 and 2 papers in journals with impact factors > 10.
The 27 staff of the Institute of Botany serve 50 posts in various international organizations and international journals, including as council members of the World Conservation Union (IUCN) and associate editors of several international journals.
In 2009, the Institute of Botany signed 6 cooperation agreements with the University of Sussex, UK; the Smithsonian Tropical Institute, USA; and the Mongolian Academy of Sciences, as well as other organizations. The world's leading financial firms, HSBC Bank and the Earthwatch Institute jointly established "China's regional climate research center" in cooperation with the Institute of Botany at the Gutianshan research station for forest biodiversity and climate change, Zhejiang Province.
In addition, the Institute of Botany actively promoted the development of a number of large-scale international programs in China, such as establishing the species 2000 China node, China's regional center of Encyclopedia of Life (EOL). These works have won international peer recognition for the Institute of Botany. The 2008-2009 edition of "China's list of biological species" was released. China's Regional Center for plants, animals and the micro-portal operating environment has been successfully built, and the system testing was completed.
International academic exchange normalized
In 2009, the Institute of Botany held 7 international (bilateral) academic conferences, 1 cross-strait symposium and 1 international training course, covering integrative botany, grassland ecology, systematics and evolutionary botany and energy plants. The "Forum of Plant Biology" sponsored by the CAS Key Laboratory of Photosynthesis and Environmental Molecular Physiology and the "Ecology Forum Xiangshan” jointly sponsored by the State Key Laboratory of Systematics and Evolutionary Botany and State Key Laboratory of Vegetation and Environmental Change are becoming professional forums and have held more than 50 lectures. The organization of these meetings played a positive role in demonstrating the research results of scientists and promoting international academic exchanges.
In addition, the Institute of Botany won the bid for hosting the 15th International Conference of Photosynthesis in 2010 and the 19th International Botanical Congress in 2017.
Level of introduced foreign expertsgradually raised
In 2009, the Institute of Botany introduced Professor Robert Andrew Spicer, Open University, UK, as a visiting professor and Dr. Matthew E. Simmons from the USA as a young international scientist. Dr. Matthew also received research funds for foreign young scholars of the NSFC. These foreign scientists will work at the Institute of Botany for a long time and will play an active role in the development of relevant disciplines and in training young talents.
International cooperation projects made good progress
The cooperation between the Institute of Botany and the Mongolian Academy of Sciences in the field of grassland ecology has received support from a major international cooperation project of CAS. The collaboration project "Flora of China”, which was jointly compiled by the Institute of Botany and the Missouri Botanical Garden, has published 17 volumes and 16 illustrations. In view of the excellent results and international influence of the project declared by the Institute of Botany, the U.S. editor, Dr. Peter H. Raven, achieved the 2009 Award for International Scientific Cooperation of the CAS.
