Jointly sponsored by Chinese Academy of Sciences, Botanical Society of China, Chinese Society for Cell Biology, Genetics Society of China and Chinese Society for Plant Physiology, “Plant Biology Symposium 2009” was held in Yantai, Shandong Province, China from August 10 to 14, 2009.

The event was composed by three parts: JIPB’s Editorial Board meeting, the Symposium and a workshop on editorial skills for high-level international journal. The event attracted more than three hundred participants from China and 27 senior plant scientists from America, UK, Italy, Germany, The Netherlands, France and Japan, all of whom are JIPB editors. The main topics of the symposium were: Molecular Evolution & Ecology, Photoperception, Cell & Development Biology, Plant Hormones & Functions, Rice Functional Genomics and Stress Response. The latest progress and many hot topics in the international plant biology research field were presented and discussed.

The editors of JIPB discussed extensively the progress of the journal on the Editorial Board meeting. Future development strategies, including publication of several special issues in 2010 were decided upon. The symposium has received invited manuscripts and the special issue on “Integrative Plant Biology” will be compiled at the very beginning of 2010.

The speaker, Prof. William Lucas, Associate Editor of Plant Cell and JIPB, presented a variety of scientific writing and manuscript processing guidelines for both scientific authors and academic journal editors. All have greatly benefitted from his excellent workshop.

The symposium provided not only a platform for the participants to show their achievements, but also offered a great opportunity to discuss, study and explore possible future collaboration with like-minded.
